Welche Programmiersprache für GUI/Web Software?

Abend!
Ich will eine Desktop-Anwendung schreiben, die recht viele Tabs und Tabellen beinhalten wird und vermutlich die Daten als XML oder in einer DB speichert. Die Tabellen werden außerdem in (Torten)Diagrammen visualisiert.
Sehr reizvoll fände ich es, wenn man die Software irgendwie auch übers Web starten könnte. Also man sich auf einer Seite einloggt und da dann die Software startet (oder die Software im Browser läuft?)
Mit welcher Technologie könnte man sowas realisieren?

du könntest gtk+ benutzen, das hat ein html5 backend

Hm, die Antworten helfen mir alle nicht so wirklich weiter. Swordfishs Posting war mal total sinnlos, da Java-Applets/Server Side Scripts für Webseiten gemacht sind und meine Software ja auch Standalone laufen soll.
GTK+ will ich eigentlich auch nicht benutzen, da ich es persönlich eher hässlich finde:/

Der Hinweis auf Java bzw. .NET oder Flash/Silverlight ist der richtige und einzig sinnvolle Weg.

Ein Programm für beide ist IMHO nicht die beste Idee. Daher würd ich mich auf eines konzentrieren, es dafür aber dann richtig machen.

Dann hast du keine Ahnung!
Du kannst aus dem fast gleichen Java Code ein Java Applet und gleichzeitig eine normale Java Anwendung machen und dazu sind in deinem Code nur ganz wenige Modifikationen notwendig. Wenn du die GUI sauber abstrahierst und Interfaces verwendest, sollte das alles eigentlich kein Problem sein.
